Title
"Hildegard's 3rd vision: The Cosmos" of the Rupertsberg Codex Facsimilie (original c.1150-79, facsimile 1927-33), fol. 14r, from the Abbey of St. Hildegard
Subject
Manuscript illumination
Description
This illumination is an artist’s interpretation of the accompanying text of Hildegard’s third vision, which concerned the form of God and the Cosmos. The cosmos are depicted as one womb or seed-like entity, with the Earth and the Moon at the center. The original manuscript survived throughout the centuries until WWII, when it was lost during the evacuation to Dresden. Thankfully, nuns of Eibingin Abbey (formally the Abbey of St. Hildegard von Bingen) had made a meticulous facsimile just ten years prior.
